Sanctuary Ranch: a novel is the first collaboration for authors Junior Michael Ray & Corinne Joy Brown, and I felt they did an incredible job. Ray, like his hero in the story Jess McLain, is a former Army Ranger who is well-known in both country music and rodeo circles, and his own experience lends credibility to his hero's actions and emotions.
Set in the picturesque Wyoming Wind River region, the story follows Amy, who is a country music star wannabe from New Jersey, through a painful interview with a couple of talent scouts, themselves down on their luck, who see promise in her voice but are disgusted by her out-of-control alcoholism and less-than-professional attitude. They talk her into agreeing to put herself in their hands for six months in order to make her over into the next big name in country music, and then they pressure Jess into taking her in at his ranch and breaking her of her bad habits as well as teaching her a true Western outlook and accent.
Jess was a big-name rodeo star with a golden voice, but after a bad fall he sank all his money and efforts into building up his own horse-breeding ranch. I liked this story for several aspects — it's unabashedly patriotic; it was a good look at the realities of what it takes to keep a ranch running; I had the feeling I was being invited to peek behind the scenes at the rodeo and on-stage with the country music singers; but most of all I liked Jess — a man with flaws who still gets up every morning and does the best he can, with whatever he's got.
That's my idea of a true hero. |
